scriobhneoir: Yes but for a guy without sattelite, it's all he'll get. Bizarrely, there are still a few BDO purists who regard that championship as the real one.

That is because the BDO World Championship is the real one. It pre dates the PDC championship, it's open to all darts players unlike the PDC which is effectively a closed shop for it's member players only. Incidentally, the PDC accepts the BDO to be the official body responsible for running Darts in the UK as a member of the World Darts Federation so as such it means that the PDC is subservient to the BDO, in spite of them both effectively being separate bodies.

The PDC does have better media appeal on it's side given it's TV exposure and the best known and most skilled names on it's circuit so to you and I, it's seen as better. As the money is in it's tournaments, any BDP players that emerge through end up joining up on it (Steve Beaton, Richie Burnette, John Part and Raymond von Baarnevelt to name but a few) so there isn't much chance for it to break new talent in the game or for it's players to gain the international exposure that they deserve; a strange situation if you will

Good old losty. Trust you to find the position that practically no one else would agree with just to disagree with people. You're entertaining, I'll give you that.

Of course it pre-dates the PDC. The only reason that the PDC exists is because of the arrogance and intransigence of Olly Croft who put himself before the sport he claimed to love. Apart from Bobby George and Mike Gregory, none of the top players stayed with the Olly Croft Appreciation Society, even Gregory originally went with the WDC. That says a lot.

It's interesting that Darts has a legacy issue with poor leadership that snooker also suffers with in the UK and how it has coped with it. Players tired of seeing media exposure and sponsorships waning and wanting to protect their incomes is closer to the truth. As it stands, the PDC have looked at ITV, ESPN and Bravo as television outlets rather than solely with Sky to try eke out extra bucks. However the trump card is held by the BBC who have always carried the BDO World Championship; if this can be pried onto ITV then the BDO would have every amount of coverage that the BBC can offer and yet be in every household in the UK, something cable/satellite TV and ultimately the PDC can't quite offer.

You're right Losty. The couple of minutes here and there of coverage that the BBC are giving is really benefitting Darts.roll eyes They've now gone to showing a whole 3 matches live. Wow, what wonderment!

Actually if I'm not mistaken was there not a period in the late 80s early 90s when ITV covered the Championship?

A mere 11 hours live today on BBC 2 you have digital enabledwink Non digital have to make do with a mere 85 minutes live and almost 3 hours of highlights this evening; more than enough for most of us to take. Unless you have nothing better to do all day laugh

Yeah a part from the top few, very few of the com petitors in the world B championships would get beyond the last 64 of the real one.

Losty: Many people have cable/digital channels without subscribing or access to Sky Sports and they can get several hours of coverage on BBC. There are still many in the UK and Ireland who still rely on terrestrial analogue for their TV who don't have access to Sky or digital channels of any network.

That said, even in this age of multi choice viewing and mediums to access TV, BBC and ITV rule ratings in the UK and as such the ability to obtain sponsorship for sports events hangs on how much exposure can be sought on these channels.

True, but my brother made a good point on this yesterday. He quite rightly observed that a lot of people don't have Sky Sports and will watch the BDO darts just because it's on, when they see it, but big Sports fans will usually have Sky Sports.
