robplum: And I must admit the world would be a much nicer place without all the angst and bitterness that this topic has created. It was started in the hope that it could create some positive discussion, but not matter how many positive arguments are given we still end back up at the same thing.

that part of my post was written by jem not me, i was not commenting on your post

I care

grin so often I try NOT to read your posts.. In fact at times, I grind my teeth into the inside on my mouth in an attempt to not respond to your posts....

but every so often my capacity as a free thinking human being gets the better of me, and Im drawn to...sucked in maybe to read what you have written.....

sadly I have read the few things you've posted of latecrying

do you honestly in all the realms of reality believe that smoking doesnt cause some cancers?? are you clearly that stupid?? are you the lone mouse against all the rheams of medical research to the contrary?? do you believe that you, in all your complete idiocity can argue against such fact??

Good grief Ron, grow a brain!!! Smoking causes some cancers.

Do you believe that references to Christian Doctors has any relivance in this argument? what christian doctors?? Im a bloody christian, I go to church each and EVERY Sunday, and I smoke.. what the hell is your argument?? What?? what have doctors done, with the exception of treat people (including delusion idiots like you) to the best of their abilities. Hang whatever you want on the Christians... but when you're dying, I bet you dont refuse treatment because someone is Christian, Jewish, Black, White or Brindle....

firstly this is not a personal attack, no judgment is put to anyone person, nor am I trying to shove my views or thoughts on to anyone.

But the Hippocratic Oath that all Doctors in Australia swear too is not religious.
There is no swearing to any God or religion, but to themselves. The only mention of God is to state not to try to be God
I have copied it below for reference.

My doctor at present, is Jewish.
The doctor I went to last weekend is Muslim.
I have been to Christian doctors, Buddhist doctors and quite a few others as well. They all swear to the same oath. I also use chinese medicine, acupuncture and another practice that I find benefits me. I am open to other beliefs and practices as no one field has all the answers.

So if you want to disregard modern medicine that's ok with me, but maybe just say you believe in Eastern medicine not Western (modern)dont give all the credit to the Christians, as modern medicine started with the Greeks and has used tidbits from all races and creeds, not singularly from Christianity

from wikipedia:
I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant:

I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow.

I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism.

I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug.

I will not be ashamed to say "I know not," nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a patient's recovery.

I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know. Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given to me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God.

I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person's family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick.

I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.

I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm.

If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected while I live and remembered with affection thereafter. May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling and may I long experience the joy of healing those who seek my help.

I take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma and the Sanga not doctors.
They don't respect or understand the same understanding of the actual time of death Buddhist perceive, and i certainly don't some clown clouding my mind at death time with drugs.

I motivation and statements made are been questioned.
Following the Buddhist path isn't the path of a sheep i've made statements raising issues with political views publicly made by the AMA and Politicians some members have been bagging me for making...and therefore explaining why

both would well to revisit this page

and actually read what has been said Blizzard there, i to have observed same and do not agree just giving up smoking for a long time smoker is an option

fair enough.. but I will just add something to you arguement because its relevent to what you just said then I will not bring it up again..cos I am sick of the smoking debate yawn

my dad was a smoker.. he smoked for 40+ yrs started when he was 12 yrs old.. by the time he decided to give up smoking, he was smoking 3 packets of ciggies a day.. basically chain smoked

he gave up (he is 72 now)... he did not suffer any of those things blizzard mentioned (thank goodness!) .. he is still alive today.. and he doesnt sound like he is going to cough up a lung anymore which is something I always remembered him doing as a kid

so where does that leave your argument?

hellosailor: It a a law in S.A that you do this, it is a part of my job, i do seminars and courses ,and if i fail to speak to people about their Gambling i am not doing my job, please understand, that when we see problems we do try to help, not belittle, it is hard to say you have a problem gambling or drinking, help is there, we can only advise, in some cases we can Ban them from entering the premises again.

I've always thought there should be an Australia card to limit your alcohol, smokes, gambling when buying the chips, using the pokies, etc... maybe 10 - 20% of your income can go on these vices so as to leave your family with some money for their needs instead of our wants.
Maybe even to limit the sugars and takeaway we can buy in a day so as not to become over weight, you could get bonus points for takeaway for exercise at a gym. lol
I know it's all fanciful, but some people as we know have no control over their addictions and need a little extra help.

hey Rob, firstly, this is an open forum,if you dont wish other people to reply to your post maybe you need to think about replying privately?

also when quoting, please take the time and care to quote in full, or things can be misconstrued and taken out of context, the full quote of what you post as your quote above is:
"If it is given to me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God."

I respect your choice of belief and choice in health care. I dont downgrade it or try to belittle it.
