I don't neccessarily think that it is the money or lack thereoff itself that makes people happy or unhappy. I think that if you make your feelings dependant on money and think that money is the key to happieness is where the problems start. You can be happy without money and you can be unhappy with money.
Money is something that was invented by humans, our emotional state is part of us and existed long before anyone had even thought of montey. So how can happieness be related to money alone?

The less money I have, the more I appreciate life. I see value in the little things. You don't need money to be happy. I'm a poor single mother and i'm very happy at the moment. Money would definitely make life easier, but not happier.
