I don't think that the record will ever be broken . It was sloughter on an unimaginable scale . The technology of the time raced ahead of most generals ( nothing new in that ). The cival war has also been romatacized in novels and movies however the real thing was nowhere near romantic ! It was a long, bloody, hard and ruthless curse on the land . What would have happened, if, after the Civil War, the Northern forces occupied the conquered southern states. Rounded up the citizens. Annexed their lands and declared them second class citizens. Built outposts in amongst the region and levied discipline with an Iron Fist.

Right where it is now as that's what did happen. Read your history Silverbirch. The North did exactly that to the South by not allowing whites to vote and installing military dictators who appointed cronies to administer huge counties for bribe money.
