outdoorgirlsun: Oh Gosh!, so sad. It is so hard to understand how people can do that to other people. Why did they go into those waters? Stupid, just stupid.
tomcatwarne: Thats what crossed my mind, why sail into danger
One does wonder about these things... I'm sure you hear the scuttlebutt when you're sailing around don't you? I guess some people feel they are beyond danger and yet sailors are usually much wiser than that.
There was a British couple released not long ago after being in pirate hands for almost a year.

Not a smart move on the pirates part...
an unfortunate shame.
Yes it is so sad, one wrong decision--------but as you say in sailing discretion is the better part of valour.

Friends mourn 4 US yachters killed by piratesWis. (AP) — An adventurous quartet of yacht enthusiasts from California and Washington state were living their dreams, friends say, retiring and sailing around the world.
The four were killed by Somali pirates on Tuesday.
Monsignor Lloyd Torgerson recalled yacht owners Jean and Scott Adam during morning Mass at St. Monica Catholic Church in Santa Monica. Torgerson says the parish is heartbroken at the deaths of the couple, who had been delivering Bibles to remote areas.
Also killed were Bob Riggle and Phyllis Macay of Seattle. A friend from the Seattle Singles Yacht Club says the two were doing what they loved, but that it was small comfort.

You could say a lot about this, but it just comes down to a bad decision on their part. These people were part of a group of yachts sailing to another destination. They left the group and followed their own course and it was not a good move on their part. If they were part of a group you can bet that pirates were a topic of conversation. Considering where they were how could they be unaware of the risk?

Ccincy: I don't know why anyone would wish to travel like that anyway.
Dangers aside, it is a most excellent way to travel. You would surprised on how many people are out there sailing around. It can be boring like you wouldn't believe, but at the same time it can be the only way you might prefer to enjoy life!

I don't have a problem with the traveling part it was more about the danger regarding these Americans..

So Americans should have international waters close off to their passage because of dangers of Islamic pirates in the waters? Everyone I have read here so far points the fingers at foolish Americans for being in the water.
The waters were international waters. Open to maritime traffic from all countries.
Why not blame the men that pulled the triggers to kill 4 innocent men and women?
OH.....the Adam were sharing free bibles in the 3rd world countries. How could they be innocent? They were Christian missionaries espousing Christianity in the 3rd world. That makes them guilty of breaching bin Laden's western influences on Islam fatwa. Certainly that makes them worthy of being killed.
Why don't ya'll come out say what you really mean sometimes? Instead of beating around the political correctness bush.
The only foolish thing that the Adams did was to place their global sail for Christ online. With a moving maps showing their GPS location and destination. So the some Islamic terrorist would know the location of their vessel.
The Indian Ocean is a very big place. The small boats of the Somalian pirates don't carry even radars. But they do carry hand held GPS. So some how they knew were on the entire Indian Ocean the Adam's Quest was to make the piracy and then the murders. Someone gave them that GPS coordindate of the Adam's vessel. The Quest is not a big vessel. The Adams were targeted because of their Christian faith and the country they came from.jmo

THey're Somalian Pirates.... Why make it a religious thing.... It's a lawless thinbg as somalia has had no government... Well since before they kick your asses back into the gulf......
That is exactly what happened here. You want to sound like some accidental hijacking and murder. But you don't locate a small boat on a very big ocean without that type of navigation aids.
Having that kind of navigation aid....means that the piracy of the Quest and the murder of the four was a pre planned and pre mediated attack. That is what you really don't want to discuss here.

The misguided Americans who sailed their yacht into harms way got harmed.
