pikengren: so, i was reading the rules about opinions........
i'm lying.
i wasn't reading the rules.
i'll leave that to someone with more critical attention to detail, or someone that just has to be right.
where does it say that we have to "back up" or prove all of our statements or opinions?
i personally love to have things explained to me that i don't understand.
and even if i still don't agree, i might at least understand how someone came to a conclusion.
but, i don't think they are required to explain themselves.
An opinion does not need to be backed up but when you blatantly accuse someone of something this needs to be backed up.If I were to accuse you of following a specific poster around the forums and constantly cursing at him(yes I know you truly don't do this) then since I made that accusation against you I would have to prove it.
Regarding some subjects, if one makes outrageous claims it behoves that individual to support said claim with some form of evidence, or the individual's opinion lacks credibility and will be dismissed.

but darn, i may have had need for this on a different day.
i guess it depends on which way the wind is blowing.
1. It's accepted practice regarding the discussion of some subjects. The usual banter on most of these fora don't fall into this category, however, in the politics/current affairs section it's considered normal.
2. If the claims are not contentious then it would not be an issue.

all joking aside, that makes sense to me.
with those type of discussions, you wouldn't get anywhere if someone could claim anything as fact, rather than opinion.

An accusation is not an opinion It is a statement
An opinion is a thought expressed by a person usually based on their own specific experience, there are no right or wrong opinions, however, if the opinion is turned into a statement of fact, then the reason behind said opinion should have a reasonable explanation supporting it. It is the type and contents of the initial opinion that forms the opinion of the person hearing that opinion that they are either sensible or foolish, at least, thats my opinion
