well BK true the 26 county's are a republic - the 6 north ones are a province of the UK - but this an island of ancient Gaelic Celts not anglo saxons or orientals or africans - Australia is also a republic ...but QE2 is there ultimate boss...& thats what they want...I can see a day when scotland & wales get true independence (republics??) before south & north are united... wow

purplesmurf: Of course it is...

'We' in the eyes of some people have an incomplete Republic....
Just because we share an island, doesn't make us one nation... Would I like to see a united Island of Ireland, YES.. but not at the cost of one drop of blood, enough has been shed

ahh HEM - of course u right but since the dutch first landed in 1652 the europeans (dutch, french, english, portuguese, belgian, german, ect) dominated over the local population (the whites & blacks only met up 300 miles inland over 100 yrs l8r - the poor old san bushman were in the cape then)....even the dutch were forced to move by imperial,,ism & colonial..ism...they actualy lived with the black tribes....was the tribal apartheid before that...does mugabwe not enforce his apartheid ..as did idi amin..ect...still 'the winds of change blowing through africa' speech is still apt even today...btw - is the situation for the majrity of the rainbow nation any better 2day or worse...only the poitical structure changed...doh

I don't think any of us are advocating any more loss of life....

One island does not a nation make but it should be borne in mind that we have been one nation (albeit under the rule of Scandinavians, Anglo Saxons- invaders and colonists) for all but the last nearly 90 years.....

Of course anyone who paid even the slightest bit of attention in history class will know racial segregation began the minute Jan Van Reibeeck arrived in SA in 1600s. I was just referring to Apartheid which was introduced by the ruling National party in 1948.

I occasionally question whether we are fit to run our own affairs, perhaps we'd be better off been the 51st state of the United States.
