delamer: Am I right in thinking that everyone will eventually have to get some sort of set-top box in order to receive a signal before next year?
I'm afraid so . But I'm not ruling out them trying some stunt to get those on Freeview to have to go Saorview .

delamer: Is that one of those digital dishes you can get in LIDL?
Yes that's basically what's needed to receive digital but that's just a camping kit for a caravan etc , at least that's what Lid call it . The dish might not pick up that much . I bought a receiver and dish kit from MAPLIN ELECTRONICS but ended up having to get a bigger dish to get some more channels I wanted . You wouldnt believe the difference that made . I hope this has been a help .

No if you have an IDTV with Mpeg 4 tuner you should be fine.

I've just scanned for Saorview and these are the results, when using rabbit ears.

Digital Channels 8 (RTE 1, RTE 2, TV3, TG4, RTE News, 3e) and the following had no service (RTE jr and RTE One +1)

Digital Radio 10 (various RTE stations)

Hopefully Saorview will carry the Freeview channels in the future.

From the UK there are 2 systems. Freesat and Freeview and neither require a new box. They are in themselves digital decoders though they don't carry free access to Irish channels. RTE saw to that one.

Freeview is carried on the UK terrestrial system and other than border areas, would be inaccessable here unless like the old days in Dublin, you had a huge high arial pointed at either Wales or Newry. The decoder box can be bought in ASDA and Tesco in the north for around £20.

Freesat comes from the ASTRA satellite and can be accessed free of charge with either a freeview or a sky box using the other channels setting. There are quite a few channels on freeview which are not free to air on freesat.

Neither system requires an additional set top box.

Hi UB, it's a very recent one, they all seem to have the Mpeg 4 tuner built in these days.

But from what I saw earlier there isn't a lot of choice yet grin

Great...just love it....so on top of my TV license, which will be due soon, I now either have to buy a new TV or a set top box at my own damned expense, and for for what? So I can get a better quality picture of the endless repeats and crappy programs that RTE dish out? I would prefer better quality programs.

Freeview sounds like the better option, and to hell with watching RTE.

MarsMan: Oh right, well as the Mayan calendar ends in 2012 and the world is suppose to blow up, I won't bother then.

It is a absolute nerve though, I pay a TV license every year for RTE to produce crappy programs and endlessly repeat them, frustrated and then I will have to pay again at some stage for a set top box or new TV so I can actually watch crappy programs and endless repeats, frustrated

Screw em, satellite system will be bought instead. applause
