gsmonks: Historically, people either were married off the instant they hit puberty (marriage records from the 1700's show girls getting married as young as 12, boys as young as 14), or else marriages were arranged for some financial and social advantage, with zero thought given to anything but practicality.
Some people still hold to this sense of values where marriage is concerned.
There's also the fact that older men are generally much better educated and much more emotionally stable than young guys, and are far less prone to doing unbelievably stupid things. I'm not talking RICH older guys here. Think pratts like Donald Trump.

Now, I am a Canadian man, and she expected me to hire servants, and to run pretty much every detail of both our lives. This, AFTER we were married, but that's another story.
She had exactly zero interest in being anyone except what she had been brought up to be- a bauble on a man's arm; a decorative accessory, if you will.
So it's not just as simple a thing as the difference in age. There's generally a lot more to it than that.
