corkgizmo: Thats what i wanted to get across, but now its blown up into a mass debate on what his nationality is

I know thats what you wanted to imply with your thread and fair play to you. cheers

Unfortunately threads can take a life of their own.

Anyways since 2007 5 of the last 18 majors have been won by an Irishman...........That is brilliant and Rory will win many more I think.
I'd say the GUI are very proud of their achievements.

cheers

It's no biggie, but the OP was the person who brought nationality into it. If he wanted it to simply be a thread on golf, which it should have been, then he shouldn't have said anything about nationality. Especially given that it is an open secret that he intends to represent the UK at the Olympics in 2016.

robpacciani: I have been saying it for the last 2 years, Rory McIlroy is a sewer rat! People i play golf with were at the West of Ireland a few years back in Rosses Point, Sligo. Rory hit a ball out of bounds on the 18th and when he got back to his car he smashed his car up with his driver, and his father had just bought him the car! Spoilt sewer rat, never liked him and never will. And people will just have to face the fact he is British and that us Irish dont want him.. Shane Lowry we love you..

I'm sorry but I don't believe that story for a second. Sounds like a game of Chinese whispers to me.

Thats true Scribs as the OP was the first to mention it. When you say an open secret has he announced that he would play for the UK ?

Okay, I'll rephrase that it is strongly speculated that that is his intention. That said there is 5 years to go so he may change his mind. I have a feeling that G-mac and himself will make a joint decision of who to represent.

My point was simply that it has been an issue that has raised its head before so when nationality was raised in the thread it was obviously going to cause debate. To the best of my knowledge the only prominent Northern Golfer from a nationalist background in recent years was Ronan Rafferty and I'm not even sure whether he was or not.

scriobhneoir: David Ervine actually said he was Irish as well as British. Stephen Rea is a Protestant from Belfast and was an active supporter of the hunger strikes. So they are not all 'British'.

Two very different people they were! Ervine became more open-minded as he got older (RIP).
Stephen Rea married one of the Price sisters (don't know which one) who was an IRA bomber and then became a prominent supporter of the RIRA. Only an intense self-loathing and guilt could drive someone like Rea to marry a bitter fanatic like her.

Am not sure either. I read an article where McIlroy was interviewed in 2009 about this and he said he probably would represent the UK but he didn't sound too sure. He has represented Ireland on numerous occassions so maybe he sees it as representing both sides of the community confused

G-Mac has stated that he is unsure who he would represent as well. To be honest it would not bother me either way.

Well it would bother me, given that they'd be genuine medal hopes.

Well I'm not in their shoes so I won't judge them for playing for the UK if thats what they decide.

Am not 100% on this but I think the OCI is a 26 county organisation unlike the GUI which is 32 county.

Nope. 32 Counties. Although I'm a little bit confused about the GUI. If GUI is 32 counties, how can northern players be categorised as NI at opens? If you're from the North you can represent either Ireland or the UK.

Golf, of course, is a 32 county sport. The men’s game is governed by the Golfing Union of Ireland, the women’s by the Irish Ladies Golf Union. The teams are known simply as Ireland – that is, until the players turn professional and suddenly the European Tour for reasons best known to itself labels those from the north as “Northern Ireland” even though there is no such entity in the game of golf.

Taken from an article I read.
