ALL religions try to control hearts and minds.

The only truth is what you know.

All other things are immaterial

cool God`s going to get you! Oh yes He is. And He has nothing whatsoever to do with religion. Religions are invented by people, not God. Thats why we brush our teeth "religiously", kids go to school "religiously", ..... So Cybahippy, you are right, here! head banger

But,now, give this a thought.... what is the Bible? Its the instruction manual for behaving how God wants us to behave, and the Chruches use it in the ways that suit themself, a little twist here, a bit of warp there.... whatever. So, like good people everywhere, we are supposed to read it for OURSELVES.. because its called The Living Word of God, and what you read, sort of speaks to you at that moment in your life.... its a Guide Book for Life. Churches tried their best to keep it away from ordinary folk for a long time. Then they burnt those who insisted on doing their own thing, and those who refused to acknowledge the almighty church. So dont go confusing God with Religion... He hates it too!

As for interesting stories. They are not interesting stories.. they are instructions. Like the Good Samaritan, its not a "story" to tell, its telling us something... and because I realy like that story, Im going to tell you about it:
This guy was attacked and left bleeding on the side of the road. Along came a Priest, and he crossed over to the other side to pass by. Then along came a Pharasee, one of the religious elite, and he too crossed over to the other side and went on his way.
Then along came this Samaritan, the lowest caste of those days, a person who was not allowed to enter a church even, and he stopped, used his wine to wash the injured guys wounds, loaded him onto his mule, and took him to the next town, took him to an Inn, asked the Inn-keeper to take care of the guy, gave the Inn-keeper money for his keep, and said he would return on his way home, and see if he owed any further money for the injured guys keep.
THAT IS HOW WE SUPPOSED TO BEHAVE. To care for each other, irrespective of our circumstances. And this is what we supposed to be teaching our children.. Not the whoo-haah boring religion.dancing dancing

Yeah new religions like the kabbulah for example.. which so ridiculously just strips celebs of millions of cash which they willingly part for some sort of scrappy bracelet.. geeze how low can u go??

i am with wedward on this one.. i would put religions and politicians in ONE category.. they control people through the creations of laws and hegemony, thus coercing people to believe that what they say is right.. what they say is the bible, no questions asked please.. just go by our rules, and pls give us as much money as u can offer.

and churches are so shamefully filthy rich!!

and if the pope is really 'illuminated by God' and thus makes 'no mistakes', that how can the church explain the gastrocides they organized, the inquisitions where thousands of 'witches' were sentenced to death, and.. hoy.. dont forget the pardoners who used to sell their tokens to stupid idiots who believed they were buying a place in heaven!!!

God is in each one of us.. it is the positive energy in all of us.. the devil is in each one of us.. it is the negative energy we all manage to build and reserve.. positive energy comes from nature and being one with oneself, and not from any religion.. it is found in love.

I agree with cibahippy.

Religions are there to believe in and try to make sense in things that aren't so logical.

But maybe it isn't what we see on the news or experience ourselves. Religions are more like political parties and some seem to be dictatorial unfortunately.

How about new age beliefs?

Its not, I think, the Religion thats at fault here, But the people who invent the Religions. They the guys who end up with the plastic buckets of money.... from all the gullible people they conned out of their hard earned income.

New Age Beliefs? Thats an interesting one. I have heard that things like Herbalism, the belief in the powers of crystals, positive thinking, mental telepathy, etc are all classed as EVIL New Age Beliefs. And my reason for scoffing the instigators of this new way of looking at Age Old Beliefs... they scared people may just start thinking for themselves..... and the next payment on the Church Lear Jet will be a bit late, or non-existent, if too many people start having independent thought.

religions were invented by people.
before the people who invented religions tehre were people who invented gods/godesses/pantheon or groups of them.
so if you look it this way....all religions are man's inventions and all gods or its equals too.
but mankind (and womankind too) has so much fear of being alone, of not having anybody to blame for their atrocities, not having anybody to cry at night in the middle of a despair moment that because it's a coward thing, womankind (and mankind) invented gods. somebody to blame, somebody to ask for help and somebody to thank. thjose were the primal reasons for the existence of religions, when we were gathering fruits and hiding in caves afraid of going out and when darkness was full of death because there were animals we couldn't kill out there and we were helpless. and scared to death. and the fires needed something ....stories. and we didn't have any logical explanation for everything that was happening, not only for some few important question, but for none at all. we didn't know squat. but we always craved for answers, so we invented them. actually the first gods were godess, of birth, fertility (of the land and the women), we were dying at 18 yeras old pals...fertility was damn important if we wanted to rest as a species. then, when we started to know we could kill the animals aout ther and gained conscience of our increasing power the religions changed and were used to control that power...
