What other countries do within their borders is their business.
It's up to them. I doubt if the western powers would want other countries to invade and kill a lot of people in order to impose their interpretation of how things "ought" to be done.
That word "independence" means something like being free to do things the way you see fit in your own country. But, admittedly it no longer seems to be a western value.
