"Freezing the balls off a Brass Monkey"
This originated in times of cannonballs and cannons. The cannonballs were stacked, ready for use, on a 'monkey' that was made of brass. During cold weather, the 'monkey' would contract, causing the (cannon)balls to fall off. Hence the phrase.
