It is estimated that the cost of hosting the 2010 winter olympics is going to be in the neighborhood of 1.4 billion dollars. I sure it will be twice that in the end.

Does anyone else think that this is a terrible deal for the host country? I mean the Greeks invented this crap, why don't they host it?

All this so a bunch of sports nuts can play their game. Makes no sense to me..confused doh

I am sure, despite the costs, the country that hosts the games benefit greatly. If they didn't, there wouldn't be such a frenzy to secure the spot of "host".

yeah...it's an honor number one...and number 2...Hotels benefit, you benefit from the tickets to spectators, TV networks, everything...it ends up being a good deal for the country.

Well that maybe true, but it's the tax payers that have have to flip the bill for the infrastucture, that otherwise would not be needed. The way I see it is the corporations benifit, but the tax payers lose.

I just don't think that tax dollars should be spent for sports, I see not return on investment here.

I lived in Salt Lake City when we had the Olympics there. There was so much hype and construction, expectations, and planning. In the end, it did NOT make the money the State of Utah was expecting. They increased our taxes there to pay for a lot of the construction. None of the new tax revenue went into the public school system. There are generally 35 children in one classroom there, and just the teacher. NO aids, nothing. I dispised having the Olympics there and all the promises that were made, and the curruption.

Yup, that what I'm getting at..

In Montreal the olympics stadium actually caved in from substandard materials it was only 25 years old.

The entire stadium, nicknamed "The Big Owe," will have cost $2.4 billion when it's paid off in 2006. By then, of course, the Expos will probably be long gone, to D.C., or Northern Virginia, or Portland.

I have to agree. I always think to myself...we should do more of that kind of thing...I think it would lessen some tensions...I mean...imagine...instead of the war...have an Iraq (or current pet project) vs. US basketball match. No one dies...the other countries actually have a chance against the bully. I have often thought that. And I think it would build more patriotism than just bombing them.

I know...I oversimplified it...SUE ME.
