A Swiss man, looking for directions, pulls up at a bus stop where two Americans are waiting.

"Entschuldigung, koennen Sie Deutsch sprechen?" he asks. The two Americans just stare at him.

"Excusez-moi, parlez vous Francais?" he tries. The two continue to stare.

"Parlare Italiano?" No response.

"Hablan ustedes Espanol?" Still nothing.

Disgusted, the Swiss guy drives off. The first American turns to the second and says, "Y'know, maybe we should learn a foreign language."

"Why?" says the other. "That guy knew four languages and it didn't do him one bit of good."

Here is one of the reasons I never learned another language (I can order in a resturant in several but I can't speak them).

Every place I have been in the world most of the people spoke some form of english.

It made me lazy. Instead of taking the time to learn their language I just spoke english and someone would understand me.

Us is already a multi language country and many states need to acknowledge that . In NY speaking Russian is handy . Speaking Spanish is a great + in most states .. You are getting there .

a freind on mine has a daughter who learned Mandarin Chinese and now makes over 6 digit annual salary for that reason alone.
I got beat out of job by someone whose only abilities and training where half of mine, but she spoke and understood two languages well 3 if you count english.

It's true, the fact that many places speak english, makes those who speak english as a first language less likely to learn....I try to learn other languages for that though...just for fun, and to refuse to be like them.

I spent 5 months in Switzerland learning German, and now Im back in the UK.

I didnt get the job I applied for in Austria, so the German is not going to get used, I fear. Unless a delightful German speaker wants to tutor me, some more - and to learn German grin

But today, I am going to the Asian quarter to the local mosque. I want to learn Arabic.
I think that in return I could swap an hour of Arabic for an hour of learning English.

I have a feeling that Arabic may be of use soon!grin
