No place is safe nowadays.
I have been to Istanbul for a few days and I am always careful and I take not unnecessary risks in any place,
Well, My Mexico is already a dangerous place to visit and to live in.
What it could be nice is to hear from locals about places to visit that we do not find on a traveler’s guide.
Just today I was in a work meeting and a person mentioned of some prehistoric painting on some caves very near by my place that I had never heard of.

istanbul is hard city for live. I am Turkish and living another city. i came here to study for limited time. Although i am having difficulty to live in istanbul. Other hand, you are lucky, because people are friendly against tourists. get a map of city which has bus, metro, train, ferry lines and run around city :) (suggest on mornings)

I have relatives who live in Istambul and I have been there. Of course my uncle did not allow me to go out by myself. One of my cousins or my aunt had to go with me. The one time I was there with a girlfriend we went out by ourselves and almost got in serious trouble, so I still think my uncle's method was best, esp. if you are "obviously" from the west.
