In classical context, civilized people were called this to contrast barbarians, and in more modern context, to contrast primitive people.
Barbarian, or savages, were often used to refer to persons or groups being uncivilized, and also as a reference to a individual being brutal, cruel, warmongering and insensitive.
Primitive would be used to refer to a society with lacking development or sophistication.
I am getting confused these days (or have been for a while), because we all talk about our great civilization.
No doubt man has created one wonder after the other, all from the the vast wall of China, the pyramids of Egypt, the Parthenon at Acropolis in Greece, beautiful cathedrals of Europe (being unjust to those not mentioned), all up to today's architectural magnificents, we have powerful engines, computers, we fly, we have been to the moon, we have technologically advanced past Atomic level, we have the books of philosophers and theologians for thousands of years...
But in all this time, man has not stopped killing each other. According to historians, we have had less than 300 years of World peace for the entire recording of human history, dating back more than 5000 years. But World peace has been talked about since then.
Today we are still at war, 31 political conflicts (not all classifies as war, but most of them have a large number of casualties). Looking at the public servants (including Presidents and Prime Ministers), media (which a lot of content, I would rate as pure doctoring, or even propaganda), the general attitude amongst those who don't have time to pay attention, or those who worship their opinion no matter how biased, I get speechless. The word "peace" has lost its meaning completely, just as love and religion, and the words freedom and liberty is probably next.
I don't have any idea, or any utopian dream, but looking at the world - where !#%& did my civilization go?!?

Or did I get it wrong
From a non-anthropocentric point of view: Homos sapiens –not much for the sapiens- we are animals and part of the jungle and no matter the efforts to set us apart from animals, we do behave as animals. –literally-.
Although we are a global community, we are still secular and now more than ever, we tend to just stick to the little 'worlds' that we are most comfortable in. IMO
