ohnuts1: ditto i come on the star of greece in 68, turned 2 on the boat, dont remember much about the trip, but i do remember being put in a hostel which was like old air raid shelters ,at glenelg in adelaide which is now an horse agistment centre... a couple of the shelters are still standing... i actually got stuck in the uk, as they wouldnt let me back here when i went back with my wife as my visa ran out, 16 yrs before i could get back here all because my dad wouldnt do the citizenship

My in laws were 10 quid poms and talked about being housed in the army barracks at Holsworthy, sydney. No insulation, hot as hell in summer, freezing in winter. As he often says, the ******* illegal immigrants get the best of everything, we were invited to come and work here and we paid to come here and got put in not much more than a dog kennel!! rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing

congratulations on your anniversary NLcheering gift beer

I'd hate to think how many Gold Coasters were actually born in QLD.
In my workplace in Loganholm the main body of the workworce were Maori, Pacific Islanders and Kiwis, the rest were ex Southerners from NSW and Vic trying to make a go of it in the sub tropics.
I never could get used to the chaffing wherever skin rubbed together and ended up back in Vic. I actually did the yo-yo thing going from Vic - QLD - Vic - QLD - Vic. Think I found my favourite place to live and work now. Though a holiday in QLD during the better months are regular and much easier than yo-yoing back and forwards.

I'm by the coast, just not the Gold Coast. Much less crowded and bushland reserves with kangaroos, wombats and other wildlife.

This is the best place in the world to live NL. You know it, I know it, but you would be surprised (or maybe not) at how many Aussies don't know it, or take it for granted.

I was back in Canada this year, and was reminded of some of the reasons I left - but it is truely a beautiful place in the summer

the definition of a poofter when I was growing up was a man who wore white socks, or pink jocks or shirts! Think that definition has changed a bit now though! laugh
