The rising was a shocking waste of life, unjustifiable.

i have no time for pearse
home rule was on the cards anyway, we could have achieved independence without bloodsheed
and its 1 think to choose to scarfice your own life, its another thing to scarfice others without them knowing it
people as young as 16 were involved (sean lemass was 16 and in rising)

My grandfather was 16 too...and his beliefs never changed until he died at 86! If he'd been able to get a clean shot off at a British soldier at 86 he would have done so. Some people believe we have a country worth fighting for. Those who don't really are missing something...

sleep sleep wave
i prefer to look forward, looking back creaks my neck
its abit silly to think just because you disagree with a part of irish history your a west brit (kinda immature if you ask me)
incidently only reason 1916 was a success was due to british
the irish lost rising
public against it
and brits baggs up aftermath, making it a triumph of propaganda

Can you send this sort of stuff to Enda Kenny. As you know I'm not Irish but he seems intent on giving the country away. I'm not taking the piss here. I'm serious.dunno

Ah now,, they weren't all bad.
They gave us most of our towns and all the lovely buildings, There hasn't been a decent looking building put up since they left]They gave us the canals, ports, railways, infrastructure, government, all our government buildings were built by the British, law and order, roads, a language the rest of the world can understand, without the British we wouldn't have the counties we cheer on in gaelic games,[just the four provinces and Meath of course]Our education system, universities and schools,
We have more in common with Great Britain than any other country, at any time they could have cleared us out of the country and replaced us with their own but they didn't, Why??? because they like us, and they treat us very well considering we have been killing their citizens for the past eight hundred years.

i think they also fought for the right for us as a nation & people to express our views and opnions
and again i only said i have a problem with leaders of 1916
incidently just to point out so far people who disagree with me have resorted to name calling (west brit) & bad languangue
signs of a good way to win a debate
you can always ban me from thread (rob a poor irish man of his voice what we fought for in 1916)

doesn't history need a balanced view?
you just defending people who fought for country (ireland)
what about people who died for another country in 1916
or the highest casulties in 1916, the poor sods caught in middle
maybe we should remember ALL the people who died in 1916 rising, not just the select few

Stan I'm a bit busy here cooking a bit of fresh haddock so I haven't got the time to reply to you other than to remind you that they built all those things to facilitate the smooth running of their colony. They did not build a thing 'for' us...

I have smoked haddock in the fridge myself, and will be gently cooking it in a drop of milk later,, thicken it up with cornflour and serve with spuds and brocolli ,a staple friday dish remembered fondly from my youth, and still eaten on a regular basis.
