rivame: Individual Characteristics are built from life experiences and observations and conditioning from people and society around us. We see things in others we like or dislike and adopt what works for us. That is why Buddist monks spend time in solitude...so as NOT to be influenced. They are taught what characteristics are required by a monk and work to develop those thoughts to a higher level. jmo
I agree with all of that but here is the complicated bit, there is no way of knowing this unless we have a child born and isolated for its whole life to be studied. Even in this crazy world of scientific ethics, I can't see it being allowed. Even providing care for the isolated person breaks the isolation. Topics like this are really the great unknown, personality, the soul, character, nature versus nurture etc. We all have an idea but I doubt anyone has the complete answer.

I have been thinking since my last post. Yes, I think character is influenced by interaction with others but the power to control your character must rest with the indvidual. One should not care what others think, the only person you need to impress is yourself. I would say character development is 10% interaction and 90% individual perception. The individual is more important than society. A quick thought on animal behaviour, a lot of animals behave better than humans.

freesparrow: some thoughts on the subject:

Good character is when we behave honorably when nobody is looking.
Bad character is when we don't care who we hurt to get what we want.
Best character is when we make others feel good/happy even when we are not feeling so great.

thumbs up

This sounds like a very gregarious person I know.

galrads: Oh, my. The question of the ages. I'll give it a shot.

From my perspective: my character is who I be. To a large extent, You (everyone else) are whatever my attitude is......

From society's perspective: my character is personality and attitude towards others and things, established through dynamic (ever changing) interactions among others in my life; like career(s), charitable actions or other pursuits while acting in conformity with accepted principles of right and wrong......

How are you Freesparrow? Missed you!

I have been surviving, Mr. G. I have missed talking to you also. I would say you have one of the best characters of all the people I know based on your actions and interactions with others.
You get an A+ for your short answer essay. Can you trust the assessment given by a public school teacher??? LOL...jk
