some thoughts on the subject:
Good character is when we behave honorably when nobody is looking. Bad character is when we don't care who we hurt to get what we want. Best character is when we make others feel good/happy even when we are not feeling so great.

How would character be defined if we each lived on a desert island where no one is ever looking, no one can be hurt to get what we want and there´s no one to make happy even when we´re not feeling so great?
Is character really mostly related on how we relate to others?

Ok, Eaglewoman, you just made my head hurt ..making me think in the middle of the day!...lol. If we were completely isolated, I think our characters would not be very well developed. I believe that our characters are molded by our experiences with others. Some of us are more compassionate, stronger, more honest because of our experiences in life with others. I actually think we would be less human..more animal-like if we lived on a deserted island. Humans actually go insane without other humans to interact with. I suppose our characters would be based on the strength of our will to survive physically and emotionally.

I wish I hadn't read this thread, I have a headache now too and am due to go to bed seriously I disagree on character being based on what other people think. I believe it is based on how you perceive yourself so even on a desert island you would analyse your own characteristics probably even to a greater degree. Are buddist monks sent off into solitude to discover more about themselves

Thank you for putting what I wanted to say into words

Individual Characteristics are built from life experiences and observations and conditioning from people and society around us. We see things in others we like or dislike and adopt what works for us. That is why Buddist monks spend time in solitude...so as NOT to be influenced. They are taught what characteristics are required by a monk and work to develop those thoughts to a higher level. jmo

Character demands..... Novocain !
Every human being has hundreds of separate people living under the skin. The talent of a writer is his ability to give them separate names, identities, personalities and have them relate to other CHARACTERS living within him. ~ Mel Brooks

Mi lindo amigo! ok..so does our character change depending on who we interact with?

Oh, my. The question of the ages. I'll give it a shot.
From my perspective: my character is who I be. To a large extent, You (everyone else) are whatever my attitude is......
From society's perspective: my character is personality and attitude towards others and things, established through dynamic (ever changing) interactions among others in my life; like career(s), charitable actions or other pursuits while acting in conformity with accepted principles of right and wrong......

I will make a statement but I do not know what you are really looking for. Your thread is called "Character" and then you post " Personality Speaks", because others have chosen to talk of character I will try that one. Character is a collection of attributes and traits that define a given individual. Character can measure a persons moral or ethical quality and be based upon their reputation.
