I have already met several people from CS and even two people I can consider them to be my friends in real life.
I have kept in touch with two or three people online, and as well - they are my friends, I know about their lives and children for example...
In my opinion it depends on you, if you really want to find friends or not.

Ok... no joke.. One chain of thought is tough enough for most.. 
The idea of making 'friends' has been distorted by the cast of the net, so to speak, so many possibilities to maintain email connections is nearly impossible for me..
And if I'm spending time corresponding with 'internet friends' it will certainly distract me from what I know I want and must do to maintain day to day..
