I met a couple of Goths in my time whilst theyve been in the company of other people i know and like all friends of friends they have been 100% .
I know its a music thing but what else do they believe in
Do we just characterize that they are unhappy depressed people or have they a big interest in the occults and morbidness ...I genuinely dont know and would love to get an insight to the world of goths....
This way at least if any of my kids started to dress in black and wear make up i could have some insight to whats rocking their boat....
Im a former Punk and Skinhead myself and hope my kids will follow suit .......NOT !!!!!!
jac379: I would have thought like anyone else they choose what they want to believe in irrespective of stereotyping.
Was there a punk rulebook that you had to adhere to?
Just like mundane tattoos, the Goths always say that one of the things is to be and look DIFFERENT. And for the Irish folks, if you even went to the Rockey Horror Show when it used to be run in Harolds Cross... all the Goths down there... well they all looked the SAME. Futile.
@OP: Are Goths still around these days? Are they not just 'Scene' and 'Emo' now?

Is that anything like saying black people all look the same?
Maybe you only recognise certain salient features and don't see the individual differences.

Most Goths I knew in my 20's were kids from middle to upper class class families where their parents used TV as a substitute for themselves. I never knew many Goths that remained Goth into their 20's. Though I've seen one of two. Many of them, it's juts a phase. A disturbing thing I noticed was some acceptance of self harm. Seems many liked to wear their various mental problems and teenage angst with pride.

I cant say ive seen the folks across the water self harm ...are you sure thats not a characteture image we have of them all.. Have to say though i dont know if they do or dont .....which is why im trying to find out ....
Let me temper my stance a bit... some of them Goth women are stunning looking though. They do it 'right' and they look great. But there's not many of them.
I may appear to be an 'oldie' to some but I was one of the FIRST teenagers. I was and still am a 'Teddyboy'and like the Mods/rockers, punks/skinheads even the 'Goths', we just were expressing ourselves, to be different to the 'Norm' if you like but most of these fads, youngster's grow out of them. Though some, like myself, still like to cling on to our youth and the memories they gave us. Each one of us is an 'individual' and we have our own perseption of the world around us and will feel drawn to those who think the same. It may seem weird to many but that's what my Grandparents thought about the 'Jitterbug and Charleston' but that generation fought for the freedom that this generation now enjoy so just because you don't understand certain elements of society don't judge it harshly, unless that particular group harms the world that you share with them.

Nope. One of my Ex's sister was a Goth. She cut herself. And all her friends cut themselves. If it is an unfair caricature then it isn't "we" that have propagated it.

I know people who cut themselves ...let me rephrase.....I know people with scars plenty of scars who told me they woukd cut themselves as a reminder of a bad thing they have done ...i mean really bad things Helps keep them on the straight tracks now
It is very important to a teenager to find something they identify with. To be part of a group.
By saying the all look alike....I agree.....as in they are generally identifiable as being part of a certain group. Not as in saying they look identical.
