What are peoples views on this?
I am cringing every time I hear the ads for it on the radio.
And yesterday, by post in work, we got "postcards" to encourage us to send to our loved ones abroad hoping they will come back for a visit!
Why would people need "an invitation" to visit their own country?

It is a rehash of an idea that was tried some years ago in Scotland, and wasn't all that successful there. I would agree with much of what Gabriel Byrne has said, it is a crass attempt to get tourists in, which in itself isn't a bad thing, but sending invitations to relatives on behalf of the Government who's apathy, complacency and incompetence forced people to look abroad for a future is beyond a bad joke.
If they really want tourists to come to the country, and come back again, then they would do better to tackle the "rip off," culture that exists here.

Alot of people left this island and their loved one in tears, because they felt they had no choice in order to make a life for themselves. Hearts were broken. And now the government wants them back (temporarily) to give a wee boost to tourism? FÙCK THAT. I've seen some cynical marketing attempts in my time, but this...

Serenity4two: the point is , they shouldn't be forced /have no other option / but to leave home and emigrate -
if some people emigrate through their own choice , well and good -but people ,/ families SHOULDN'T HAVE to leave , inorder to make a life for themselves --it's just scandalous !! families being torn apart through NO fault of their own

I agree, in the perfect world/economy, people shouldn't have to leave. Unfortunately we are not currently living in that place so people need to do what they have to do. I'd rather see friends/family emigrate and have work, than stay here and get dragged down into depression and debt.

I'm sorry, but it just gets on my nerves when I hear young people bemoaning the fact that they can't get work, but are unwilling to do anything pro-active about it

i'm afraid we will have to agree to disagree Lacylou-
this subject is so very close to my heart , as i effects so many families in this small rural area .
far from these young people being " unwilling to do anything pro-active " they are doing the bravest thing of all --leaving their parents / all family connections / friends / whole way of life !!
With respect , you try telling all these mothers , their children aren't " lost " to them now --most of them haven't seen their sons/daughters for nearly a year now -and these parents haven't got the money to travel to New zealand / Australia / Canada to visit them .
As soon as someone asks how that particular son/ daughter is getting on away , the mothers burst into tears --it is a dreadful situation .
The most important "gathering " most would love to see are all the many hundreds /thousands of parents ," gathering" all their sons and daughters /grandchildren back home and into their arms and homes again .
handshake

I do understand where you're coming from, and I agree that those that emigrate are being pro-active....I was talking more about the ones that were happy to sit on their asses complaining all day!!!

We both obviously feel passionately about this, but for different reasons, so will agree to disagree handshake

it's embarrassing, i certainly won't be taking any part in it, it would be more aptly named the big shake down

i'd be much more interested in getting the crooks that fled this country to return and do some time for the damage they did

MarsMan: I wonder how many of the politicians pushing this load of crap will give up their winter sunshine Caribbean breaks to attend the these prestigious New Years events ??

I think they should keep the Dail open and working all over Christmas and New Years and invite the "Gathered" in to have a look at the muppets in action laugh
