So let's say you're in a relationship with someone or you're contemplating a relationship and you see that this person writes "I love you" to every other woman/man on the planet (i.e. on ecards, in chat, etc.)

Do you
1) Take it serious and dump him/her?
2) Take it in context? (i.e. maybe he/she is just flirting)
3) Wait and see whether he/she dumps you?
4) Create a stink, question him/her and ask him/her to quit?
5) Examine the "evidence" to see whether it was just flirting or whether he/she has a crush on that other person?
5) Excuse him/her if he/she said it to "just a friend"
5) Don't sweat it and let it go because it's only bla bla on the internet.

Me personally, I take those words serious and I'd be hurt if I discovered it and would probably create a stink, ask him to quit, but ultimately, I'd not believe him again if he said those words to me - ergo, the relationship would be doomed sooner or later.

What would you do?

Scubby!! What are you doing up so late? It's late here in California...

Okay first I would ask why he was doing this. Then depending on his answer go from there. Sorry probably not the answer you are looking for.

Hope you are having a great evening.

You mean you wouldn't take it seriously if he/she wrote it to someone else of if he/she said it to you?

It would depend on the person.

Some people "love" everything and everyone.

They love potato chips, and songs and Twitchy Billy from

the mattress store.

Well, I think that these words should be kept for a select few, not the many.

I say "I love you" to:
- my GF
- my family members

Other than this, I'll hug my female friends and talk about how they are special and amazing, but the "I love you" if said is always qualified with "as a friend" or "as a brother/sister".....

I don't think that flirting is ever harmless. There is always something in it whether it is acknowledged or denied or even sub-conscious, there is always more to it than just those 3 little yet powerful words.....

Doesn't the overuse of the word take away from the meaning?

I must admit that I find it strange when people use the word love when the feeling would be better described by a different word. (like a lot, appreciate, adore, cherish, value, etc.)

When I say :' I love you ! ' ( and I do it often !), I express my pleasure , my deep liking for the person known to me , for his existance , for his being there ...
I'm a Christian and in most cases my love is far more reaching .
Yet ,it still differs from Love towards a Special person . Then for me it is not love , but Love .

I think English is a fickeled language short on expression. I mean just how many different interpretations can be given to that little four letter word?

Love fishing, love beer, love chatting, love my car, love my BF/GF/Spouse, love my kids...... just to give a few examples of how this little word means such different things.....

I think "love" in the examples above is the right word, but the context and the intention is what gives this little word its different impetuses.

No wonder so many get easily confused by what we say in English, especially if the context and intent is not all that clear.....

If you cannot trust someone, it is self evident what the answer is.
If he lack self-esteem, don't wait until he's getting older to try to get the attention of someone younger.
A question of respect in my opinion. I am sure Bill Clinton would have a different spin on the story, but I doubt that Hillary would agree. laugh
