Common Cause President Bob Edgar suffered a heart attack and died while exercising at his home in Virginia on Tuesday morning. He was 69 years old and by all appearances was in excellent health.
Bob was a man who lived his faith -- in God and our country -- every hour of every day. The energy, intellect and boundless good humor he brought to Common Cause revitalized our organization and returned it to the forefront of the democracy reform movement. His passing leaves a hole in our hearts.
We grieve today for his family, his many friends, our organization and ourselves. We are determined to honor his memory by continuing the work he pursued so passionately. That is the least we can do. As we carry on, we are reminded of an African proverb that was among Bob's favorites:
"If you want to walk fast, walk alone; but if you want to walk far, walk together."
