It was flooding in California. As the flood waters were rising, a man was on the stoop of his house and another man in a row boat came by. The man in the row boat told the man on the stoop to get in and he'd save him. The man on the stoop said, no, he had faith in God and would wait for God to save him.
The flood waters kept rising and the man had to go to the second floor of his house. A man in a motor boat came by and told the man in the house to get in because he had come to rescue him. The man in the house said no thank you. He had perfect faith in God and would wait for God to save him.

A helicopter then came by, lowered a rope and the pilot shouted down in the man in the house to climb up the rope because the helicopter had come to rescue him. The man in the house wouldn't get in. God helps those who help themselves. What do we need God for then? You can even take it a step further....if God helps those who help themselves then He should support criminals as they are helping themselves constantly.

Well, it depends on how you interpret what is said. This is the problem with english. It can have double or triple meanings for the same saying or words.
God helps those who love him by working all things for their ultimate good, but this ultimate good may not be manifested or realised here in the physical where God is not manifested or realised in person. Instead God manifested himself in the person of Jesus Christ, and since then, has manifested his help through people who believe in Christ, trust in Christ, and obey the instructions of Christ.
So in as much as God "lives" in these people, and these people help other people, then God helps those who are helped by their own kind, by other people.
Just because someone makes a statement like "God helps those who help themselves" does not make the statement true.
So if someone said, "The sky is pink". Would you then ask the same question of them? Of course not, because their statement is not true. So maybe the statement "God helps those who help themselves" may also not be true.
