How many of you can sew a good stitch?

I can do most things, but when I catch something which I could sew, I leave it as it looks so bad I might as well buy another clothing item. This made me think, what advice can you give to someone who admits to not sewing. Is there a knack to it?

we must have some tailors amongst the community?

if they have a talent then they can charge a fee fitting for their talent, but I wonder if they make a good living since clothes are in expensive to buy so people just throw away like me, sorry recycle in the textile bin.

When I was younger I made most of my clothes, my daughter's clothes, evening gowns for my mother and my sister's wedding dress.

If you want to learn to sew start out with something simple like folding a piece of material in half and just run the machine using a basic stitch.

Know how the machine works. Very important to back stitch at the end of a row of stiches. Very important to cut the ends so the thread isn't hanging.

Pressing seams open will make your garment look professional. Sewing is fun but you can't rush trying to make something. Buy a book of all the various stiches.

Don't start out with flimsy or thick material. Start with plain cotton. Make a simple placemat.

When you fold a seam over to make an edge make sure you fold the rough edge underneath so you have a neat edge.

Good luck to you

I am sure the person didn't mean to offend. as for skill people who sew can have talent and there are many in the third world who do this for a living on peanuts and yet we buy the clothes at prices which would be their yearly wage.

Ireland is not in the third world and some do I am sure make a good living. but like taxi driving in Ireland everyone seems to be a taxi driver and you can call one and three turn up.
