I agree that the stigma of mental illness needs to be done away with....but.. sometimes people call themselves depressed when they are merely sad/unhappy/grieving/lonely or in a bad place in their lives. Sometimes self hep and getting out there is the best medicine. And yes I do know the difference having suffered in the past.

the fact is anyone can trip and fall into depression or any other illness, my aim is to reduce stigma attached to perdictuments of the mind, if so called normal people had a taste of suffering they would surely understand no douth

like some other threads, bit of overkill on this topic pedro, if you really want to remove the stigma, you need to get out there and appeal to larger audience

I dont think there is the stigma that was there in previous generations at all, in fact I have always found people very open and interested in discussing the issue, I have certainly never felt in anyway hindered by others and their perceptions of me when they learnt of my illness.

Can I ask what you mean by "our fight"? Are you a member of a working group around the issue?

Problem seems to be the solution because we depend upon the medical profession as a whole.i accompanied a loved one to a clinic, after conversations with five patients (i talk a lot) discovered they were all there to renew prescriptions for the same medication ( snake doctors?)Even though their symptoms and case histories were oceans apart.

I think the idea of the stigma of mental health is overplayed nowadays.

Yes, psychiatry is pure witch-doctery. You can't get an X-ray of depression and no lab test has ever confirmed a 'chemical imbalance'. No diagnosis = no treatment in every area but psychiatry where the 'experts' can diagnose from a checklist??? Very 'Scientific' indeed.

It was decided to treat patients with mental issues on an out-patient basis some years ago (definition=no legal responsibility)and this resulted in a one treatment suits all approach. Patients in varied states i.e. depression PST, psychosis, suicidal tendencies etc.

ive been studying the ''history of mental illness'' back 2000 years ago they thought most people who were mentally ill, were witches and demonic possessed, because of there systoms. 100 years ago they locked up and chained to the wall, ill treatment recived all round. thank god its all changed now
