Has to be Pacino..irresistible in Scent of a Woman. he could put his slippers under my bed any day. Oh, and he's a very good actor too. Absolutely brilliant as Shylock in Merchant of Venice.
Tough call. Pacino at the top of his game (Scent of a Woman, Godfather III, Heat) is really tough to beat, but so is DeNiro, and maybe DeNiro has been great more often. Goodfellas is probably my favorite movie of all time, and that was just so well played by all.
DeNiro is my sentimental pick. He can also play almost anything. In Mean Streets he was an unscrupulous punk, and in Casino he was an uptight mastermind type. He can make you love him or hate him whereas with Pacino you can't help but get the sense sometimes that he's really hamming it up.
I reckon whoever is better at comedy. Comedy isn't easy apparently. I don't know of any by Pacino in this genre. Maybe it's just the time of year but Billy Bob Thornton in Bad Santa comes to my mind..too funny.

as method acting goes. A tougher one is picking a female one.
De Niro gets the nod for the lengths he went to for a role.
He was brilliant in Raging Bull.
