I love Eurovision, for the same reasons as yourself. It is a once a year celebration of silly humour.
The "surprise" concert by Lordy for the six year olds was classic.

the bearded drag act is also a human being with a very good singing voice, singing a very good song. Netherlands song was also very good and came second and they were a man and a woman playing guitar and singing. Other good songs did well also. There's only one winner out of 26 songs.

minnieme2: the bearded drag act is also a human being with a very good singing voice, singing a very good song. Netherlands song was also very good and came second and they were a man and a woman playing guitar and singing. Other good songs did well also. There's only one winner out of 26 songs.
I guess its a difference of opinion that makes horse racing possible....
The act in question was notable for his 'bearded lady' presentation, frankly, he could have sung 'nessun dorma' as beautifully as paverotti, and still the music would have been secondary.... and im not gonna get drawn into an arguement regarding 'drag acts', since im no stranger to theatre in music and have no problem with the symbiosis of artistic collaberations and ideas (queen / the tubes / alice cooper / kiss)....
I accept Eurovision has massive appeal, but I will see it as something other than a display of cross cultural musical offering, Id agree with molly, its kitch, its theatre, and still to a point 'political tummy rubbing' between countries....
Interestingly, im having this very conversation in an open FB window among friends....opinion is hardly divided....

Cross cultural music offering is good. Anything where cross culture makes people smile, enjoy themselves and mix together has to be good. If they all just got up on the stage and sang the song with no staging whatsoever, very few would go to it or watch it. Variety is good. Especially for entertainment. It is a song contest but also needs to be a show for tv and entertainment purposes.
The horse racing comparison is a bit harsh, I think.

As for all the nonsense, about yer one being some sort of symbol for equality and live and let live....that was done 16 years ago, by Dana international, the Israeli transgender singer who won, so this really is nothing new.
