stanley8m: So Bostrom is arguing that existence in this world is a simulated reality?

It does and it doesn't, in a way. If this reality should indeed be a simulation, then it would obviously have a creator (creators), but we can not tell who or what created who created us. Our creators could themselves live in a simulation, a bit like if super advanced SIMs of the future start building their own powerful computers to create simulations, and then SIMs within that simulation reach the same point and so forth... The 'originals' of such a line up, could of course be the creation of a God, or could be chance developments - this we'd not have any way of finding out, unless they would tell us (if they cracked the riddle themselves, that is).

However, if we follow up on the simulation hypothesis, then what we are is also 'data', and data can be saved and transferred. We are the sum of what we have felt and experienced, and all this could in theory then be saved and infused into another simulation, which could be a 'better world', as many religions promise.
Or.. we may infused ourselves into the simulation, maybe to learn or to entertain ourselves (bored bunch of Q, the lot of us o.O lol). No way of telling as it stands.

@ stan
There are critics, of course, there always are.. but this is something taken serious enough within the scientific community. I am not sure how far research has gotten, but some teams have been working on trying to find evidence, based on that simulations always face constraints, and the last I heard, stuff was found that could be interpreted as this reality indeed showing constraints too.

It is fascinating stuff either way, which could rectify Plato's analogy of the prisoner in a cave thumbs up

Yes, I noted the theory has similarities to some Greek philosophy, and Bostrom studied philosophy.

It could be possible, but surely if we are co-existing in a simulated reality, and are both independently cognitively aware of our environ, it proves his theory wrong.

Either that or you are a figment of my imagination that I have created in a virtual world.

I would have to pinch you to see if you yelp, or thump me, more like. laugh

Mathematics points to a creator...

Don't get too excited. It is only a theory Jt, and a philosophical theory at that.

Not at all. Just take gaming. I will see on my screen what you'd see on my screen just the same, and there is no reason to think this would not be the case if we'd enter a simulated reality.

Also scientists have argued that sentience could develop in a simulation, independent from the sentience of the creators of the simulation.

We do not even understand sentience yet, really, or consciousness. Heck, just look at multiplicity and tulpamancy - amazing phenomena, which we really have no grasp of yet, as psychology is slowly beginning to admit.
