Hey Canada, get your geese in order ( Archived) (8)

Apr 19, 2016 10:41 AM CST Hey Canada, get your geese in order
I traveled to Canada with my family when I was 15 for 2 weeks. I met Micheline in Quebec and fell in love.
At 17 I went again with my uncle and spent 6 weeks with Micheline and her aunt and uncle, they spoke almost no English and I spoke as much French. Back again to Ontario to a drag race with a business partner and 2 race cars in my late 20's. Then to Montreal & Quebec on my honeymoon. The last time for 2 weeks to Ontario as a consultant/trainer for a start-up service business.
On every trip I was made to feel welcome in my neighbor country and have come to love Canada. That is why I'm surprised to learn about this misdirected aspect of Canadian benevolence.
I have no doubt the same condition exists in the US though probably not as much.

"If we do this for Syrians, this outpouring of affection and generosity Canadians have shown, then let's step up to the plate at home. We need to embrace domestically what we so readily do internationally."

Do you happen to know why there are Syrian War refugees?

Perhaps, you should look at your our home foreing policy first.

Yes, Canada is indeed sympathetic to refugees, and yes, there is an ever on-going discussion regarding First Nations in this country. I could start a separate forum regarding this matter, for Canada, the US....we all have our moments when it comes to the so-called indigenous races. And no, the USA is just as culpable and remains as such, as does Canada, to this day. As I say, it is a forum unto itself. There have been "rights" and "wrongs by both countries and both sides.

I know exactly why there are Syrian Refugees and it has nothing to do with American foreign policy. It has everything to do with the Government of Syria bombing its own people plus a few other little problems the Syrian people are dealing with like terrorists saturating their country.
Me thinks you missed the whole point of my thread.

Canada needs to help heal our First Nations people...glad our PM has made a move in that direction...as for the Syrians...it's a humane act to accept them into our country and provide shelter from war...wine

Dang gal...as I said...it is a forum onto itself! I work closely with and live amongst the First Nations...tis a huge and enflamed topic...point of interest....I can introduce you to some who would go ballistic on the mere fact you stated, as a white-woman...that it was OUR country....we are in trespass! wink

Whoa...my bad. mis-read....you were referring to Syrians about the "our country". Sheesh...I am already bracing myself for the influx of refugees from the USA if Trump wins!

Now remember....be afraid, be very, very afraid...thank goodness Justin has taken over...

Indeed, most refugee situations are induced by internal strife...the key is to show humanity towards the actual innocents without importing the root cause of the strife that caused them to flee!

Syrians as well as other countries have had their own internal fights for centuries and they were happily fighting and killing themselves until (USA+ allies) + Russiadecided to enter into action in the Middle East.

Washington is one of the most active players in Syria's civil war, but it's accepted effectively 0 percent of the conflict's refugees.

"..U.S policies have destabilized the Middle East generally in almost innumerable ways, at least three directly link the country to the wave of Syrians fleeing violence: fracturing Iraq, proliferating arms throughout the region, and continuing air strike operations against the Islamic State.

For the United States, the invasion of Iraq and the “missteps” that followed are characterized as regretful decisions that lie firmly in the past. Yet the ability to divorce these policies from their devastating consequences is a luxury wholly unavailable for Syrians and Iraqis who are today grappling with the enduring brutality of the Islamic State.

According to a report published by the Congressional Research Service, Washington has sent over $7.7 billion worth of nebulously defined “military aid” to Syria since 2011. In the same timeframe, the United States has only accepted 1,434 Syrian refugees.

The United States is far from the only nation responsible for funding widespread violence in Syria. For example, roughly 10 percent of Russia’s total weapon exports flow directly into Damascus, substantially supporting Assad’s military operations. At the same time, the country has granted just 1,395 Syrians temporary asylum..

Yet the United States derives unique culpability from the Obama administration’s dramatic acceleration in arms sales. According to William D. Hartung, director of the Arms and Security Project at the Center for International Policy, arms sales in Obama’s first five years in office totaled over $169 billion, exceeding the amount approved by the Bush administration in its full eight years in office by nearly $30 billion. In fact, the current administration has “approved more arms sales than any U.S. administration since World War II.”
