I would now go on to name my favourite philosopher, and say a little bit about the reasons for my choice, and that would probably be expected of me, but I don't have a favourite philosopher, so I can't.
I would prefer us to stick to dead philosophers, as they tend to be the most interesting.

Any proponents of Nihilism are okey dokey with me, especially if they're sophist inclined. Nothing exists, save rhetoric and song.

I was rather hoping that philosophers existed. Otherwise the thread may as well not exist either.
Anyway, BB, tell us about the Sophists. Or better still, tell us a load of rubbish and convince us it's true, by way of a demonstration of that particular school of thought.

oooh .. Pre-emptive strikes ... rather cutesy don't ya think. Frightening, lonely, but we must carry on...
Circlip: Would you mind having a word with Wittgenstein, there are one or two things I'm not clear on.
Ok!! What do you want to know? Shall I ask him how he came to the conclusion that the world is defined and given meaning by the words we choose? How does he think the world is what we make of it?

d4nI314: I like his principles about justice, beauty, equality and his exploring cosmology and the universe.
What don't you like about him?
I don't know enough about him to dislike him, but I think his theory about sort of ideal forms of everything existing somewhere is a bit pointless. Wasn't he opposed to the idea of democracy, or am I mistaking him for someone else?

I want to know more about the things of which we cannot speak, you know, the things we must remain silent about. Ask him what he's got to say about that.
I have a personal bias about most philosophers in that they tend to teach us what to think (or act) rather than how to think. But when you think about it, most thinking has already been encapsulated and or enshrined as belonging in whole or in part to some philosopher, so ... what's to think about really?
For this reason I appreciate sophistry to a greater degree, speciousness notwithstanding because it at least tries to escape tiring philosophies that present nothing new.

He says many on CS should be abiding by that philosophy... If they can't say anything useful or interesting about something, they should probably keep quiet

But that's what you also do, BB. I'm not saying that in a critical way, it is what most people who have a system of beliefs tend to do. I know I have given you a hard time about it, but I admire that you've thought deeply about something and have set out to explore it. We just have to use our own judgement, and take what we think has value.
And even disagreeing with what has been thought and said before requires entering into a process of thinking, which is always a good thing.
