It's a long and detailed story, I will try and keep it short. In the Norse heathen tradition which our ancestors practiced before christianity came and ruined everything. The God of the Summer Sun, Baldur was murdered by Hothar, the God of Winter. Now Frigg, Baldurs mother had been having dreams about the death of her son and everything on Earth had sworn an oath not to harm him. The Gods had taken up for fun, throwing rocks and spears at Baldur, all of which bounced off, doing no damage. Only Hothar did not take part because he was blind. Loki had discovered that one plant thought insignificant had not sworn the oath. This was mistletoe (The kiss under the mistletoe at midwinter is the kiss of death).Loki had fashioned a dart our of mistletoe and given it to Hothar so he could join in. He guided Hother as he threw the dart and killed Baldur. A God by the name of Vali (Later St Valentine), avenged Baldurs death by shooting Hothar with an arrow. (The arrow represents a shaft of sunlight melting the winter snow). Loki faced a far worse fate which I shan't go into here. So Vali represents revenge or vengence, the sweeping away of winter to allow the coming of spring. It is a masculine force and it is violent. Now its degenerated into a day for lovers.

it had nothing to do with a "saint" named valentine? it's not a tradition started to honor a martyr? it wasn't started or based as a religious holiday?
it didn't morph into what it is today from folklore and more over the centuries?
