Coldheaven: When I was a kid my mother carved out a large turnip for a Halloween lantern. Put a candle inside it and a string thro the top to carry it. We loved the Halloween lantern. Took turns carrying it around. The only downside to this turnip lantern was that my mother said if you want the lantern you gotta eat the turnip for dinner that she carved out cus it’s not going to waste. We all hated the turnip and her creamed potato she made with it. Was disgusting to us back then. So we sat for hours trying not to eat the turnip dinner but dying to carry the turnip lantern lol

Anyways that was many years ago. By the time my kids were having Halloween the American version of pumpkins instead of turnips was here and a pumpkin is way easier to carve for Halloween than a turnip cus ya just scoop out the pumpkin seeds and then do the face. So easy. I never made my kids eat the pumpkin tho. They just loved the lantern and had the fun without the trial of a dinner they hated.
I love this story of yours hug

Was the turnip a family thing or an Irish thing?

I love turnips I could of eaten your turnip for you laugh
