Either they become closer , or they’re sick of the site of each other .
My parents couldn’t be separated after we left the nest . Unfortunately my father past away soon after .

bodleing2: I've never been to a silent retreat although I once stayed at a centre where silence was observed until after breakfast, I found that pretty challenging.
I've spoken to many who have been to silent retreats and all of them claimed it had a positive effect, especially after a few days. I guess when you are amongst a group of people without any vocal interaction one of the main effects must be a defeat of the ego, it's craving for autonomy crushed. Not a bad thing at all, in fact a quick way to find out who you really are.

The first step to being introverted and knowing yourself is to be silent first, but not just vocal silence but also intellectual silence.
