1) "The Lord of the Rings". I read that at least 15 times by now, and it never ceases to amaze me how everytime I read it, I seem to read a different book
2) "Les Miserables" by Victor Hugo. It's a fantastic and detailed read, clearly a book yo uhave to read at least twice
That's tough. Obviously you'd want something that you could read over and over again. I'd take the Complete Works of William Shakespeare, The OED, and The Oxford Book of English Verse 1250-1900 edited by Arthur Quiller-Couch.
Good choices Brigitte and Plarkin. I would have to take something classical; something that gave me comfort as a child/teenager. It would have to include something by Dickens, either Great Expectations or A Tale of Two Cities. Then I would take that evergreen classic that I recommend everyone read at least yearly: Vanity Fair by Thackeray. My third choice would be a collection of short stories by Lorrie Moore: Birds of America.
P.S: We should be more practical and take books on survival and how to build a raft/boat!
Vanity Fair is on my To Read List right now, I simply adore classical English literature. I had given Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice a thought, but it still can't compare with Les Miserables
Brigitte reading Shakespeare is a like peeling an onion. There are layers upon layers. I have read King Lear at least a hundred times and have seen it performed over a dozen times and it always amazes me. The same could be said about Hamlet, Julius Caesar, etc.
Well, my favourite two are MacBeth and Midsummernight's Dream, they are fascinating in a way. It always amazes me what insights into the human psyche Shakespeare is giving, considering the time he wrote in and the general mindset of the era.
The goos thing about his collected work would be that it includes a large number of books and poems, so it would really take a long time to read through it all ;o)
Mine would be "how to survive on a distant island when your shipwrecked", "how to make smoke signals", and "safe things to eat on an island". And I'm pretty sure those books really do exsist lol.
