I couldn't agree more with your missive. The rewards gained from the mastery of language and vocabulary greatly outweigh the time taken to study them. The right word at the right time in the right place ... the addage of a writer. Words are tools with which we convey our thoughts to others at every level of conciousness ... why allow oneself to be restricted by ignorance, especially when learning is also so much fun not to mention personally satisfyng. Thank you for your interesting post.
Words are hidey holes. We create them to hide behind them. Any good lawyer will show you how a case is won or lost by the right word.
Our "PC" world is up the crapper with out a paddle because of the emphasis we place on words and the way we use them to relate to others.
If it is not everyday language then put it in the garbage. Don't confuse the the issue with flowery language. Straight talking causes less problems and less issues'.
"Up the crapper" ... well that's certainly a colourful expression isn't it.
The "straight talk" to which you allude is limited by one's vocabulary as well as perception, attitude and opinion.
Isn't it nice though that one can enjoy the freedom of speech in our "PC World" ... perhaps that's why it's so far "up the crapper" you mention :) I see no need to limit one's vocabulary or to speak in shorthand when there are subtleties of meaning that cannot be expressed by "straight talk". I agree that the use of a simple or commonly understood word is preferable to the use of a complex or esoteric word if and so long as the word says all that is intended to be said. "Hidey Holes" may be just as useful to hide ignorance as they are untruths.
Many a time we persist with our ignorance by creating alibis for it.
Dear Mr Dragon, I think you misunderstood the post.. I advocated love of words not superficiality. There is difference between flowery language and being cogent.
To master spellings one should visualize the problematic word since English is not a phonetic language.
Err ... I don't do the kayak thing, and I'm not sure if you're alluding to “Tontons Flingeurs”, the Coulee Region of Wisconsin, the Grand Coulee dam or ?
Sarcasm is a very delicate and precise art form, which must be worked at for many long years before one can finally master its subtle intricacies.
Aw ... chute !! Another sensibility down the crapper :) Oh well it is PC Land
Personally, I like straight to the point, intelligently constructed sentences that are spelled correctly.
If there is a word that I find difficult to spell, I will look it up in the dictionary. That's a personal choice.
The impression I get of someone who throws words together sloppily is that of someone who is poorly educated and has not used much thought, care or respect for those trying to read the information put forth. This same sentence makes implications but not necessarily dictates the truth. Some people just need to rush into their writing responses so the short/long, mispelled, poorly structured sentences get the upper 'hand'. So be it.

are no short cuts in
acquiring a dynamic vocabulary.
Following are the observations from my teaching experience:
READING EXPANDS VOCAB
READ BOOKS but those books
which stimulate your soul not
those prescribed by others.
BE WORD SENSITIVE
Never miss a word or guess the meaning of an unfamiliar word but look up the meaning in an authentic dictionary.
USE PRECISE WORDS
The next time instead of sayingthat someone is
"nice" say he or she is pleasant, affable, friendly,
sensual, sensuous, spirited.
Love words and they would certainly reciprocate.
