1. However we want to hide behind the law, its still taking another life, its still barbaric, whether "legal" or not. If we are to claim the moral high ground, we must rise above that behaviour, however we try to justify it.
2. Mistakes can and have been made. For example (and its only one!!), Evans was hanged for murders committed by John Christie in the late 1950s, I believe.
3. If someone has committed such a terrible, evil crime, then to have punishment that is so quick, therefore, they will know nothing and experience no pain thereafter, I feel that is too easy a way out for them. They should be incarcerated for life (meaning LIFE), made to pay for their crime, see the error of their ways and attempt to atone for that, and attempt to redeem themselves.
I found one film on this subject very poignant.... "The Life of David Gale" starring Kevin Spacey and Kate Winslet....... excellent film!!
The problem I have with capital punishment is who gets it and who doesn't and who decides... Charles Manson is sitting comfortably in prison and he was responsible for one of the most horrendous crimes of his time. Who are they saving it for if not him?
Laws without punishment are only words. If a person is willing to pay the price then the law is nothing. To make the punishments washed down down by any means makes the laws weak. People will do what they will without fear. That is our law today!
In some situations I say yes, in others I say no.
If a person is of a danger to others in or out of prison and the law has given the death sentence. Then Yes! This is to protect others more so than punishment paid.
If the person is not a danger to others even if the law has given the death sentence. I say no!
I think that there are people who do things so terrible that almost everyone would agree that they should not be allowed to live...the problem with capital punishment is that there is no way to make it completely fair, simply because of the nature of human beings. Look at Texas......
Short of finding someone running up and down the street covered in blood screaming, "Look at me I killed them all" you have a very difficult time saying for absolute certain when someone is guilty.
I just saw a TV show last night on Jeffrey MacDonald - The Green Beret doctor who has been in prison since 1970 for killing his wife and children- and the evidence can be very compelling both ways depending on who is presenting it.
How do you compensate someone for wrongfully taking their life?
