What do you know about it?Is there something common between narcissism and feeling your conviction is absolutely right only?

"Narcissistic personality disorder is characterized by extreme focus on oneself, and is a maladaptive, rigid, and persistent condition that may cause significant distress and functional impairment."

Some people use the term to decribe excesive selfishness.....true narcissism is much more extreme...usually used to describe disconnected, controlling and manipulative spouses or parents

I found interesting to compare narcissism to an EGOTRIP of self admiration type.wave

At college I was called a narcissist by some guys I associated with. That got me thinking. Yes, I was always dressing magnificently, I could carry it, straightening my hair, and all those little things that fed it more and more. I was a clever boy and I also had intellectual pretensions. I had no experience of women, was terribly gauche with them, but I was full of myself, truly.

Natasha, was there any connection between all this and any pigheadedness on my part. A some little bit. I was not liked by women. I was always talking down at them. I was good from far but far from good. In later life I became as you describe. Arrogant in mind and full of admiration for myself.

That has been eroded into dust since. But there is a big nugget of truth in what you have undoubtedly noticed in private experience.thumbs up

These things go together. How can you be humble if you are being grand?

Don't think so Natasha ...conviction is generally a logical and rational conclusion. Whereas narcissism is a personality disorder.

There is not much difference. Really. Only obstinacy.

What may be on vogue for a women, might be called narcistic for a man, nowaday´s its somewhat outdated.
Even the closet queen enjoy´s freely the Love Parades and Gay Parades, not hiding its phantasies but living it in a free way...

Obsession can not be compared to generally - there are just too many diferences - and as long its not self obsession in a narcistic way.. you cant generalize it -
I think Carl Jong got the best described studies for that .. without labeling it a necessarely a disorder, because it describes also a natural of most human behaviour.wink

I read Jung on the subject. He does call it natural behavior. He does not praise it though - remember he was a very conservative person.

There are always natural inclinations and equally unnatural exploitative ones.Ones which are a fad, a pretension, a thing to describe yourself like on a CV. You really cant think in a general way when it happens to someone you know.

Ummmm, narcissism has too much to do with self admiration, ego centrism, being self centered, etc. it is sort of dealing with a case of mistaken non-entity; the one nice thing about egotists is that they don't talk about other people; they are usually me-deep in most conversations; an anaesthetic that dulls the pain of stupidity...%)

I believe it's the line crossed between having a healthy self-esteem/assertiveness...as opposed to thinking one is a *cut above the rest* and feels that life and people around him/her owe him/her something. Borders on the arrogant-- * MY WAY OR NO WAY*. Hard to handle in personal relationships where compromise and understanding is needed.

dunno

Yep!! I think perfectly right...

To add:

We should not simplify narcissism. There are lots of theories regarding narcissism and for some of them it is a pretty complicated concept (Such as Kohut's Self Psychology). Just to keep in mind: Everyone is to some extent narcissist; the only problem is crossing the borders of healthy narcissism and swimming in the waters of grandiose self...

On the other hand, joke aside, I do agree that in actuality, Narcissism is a mental disorder and is a far worst condition that just a mere self rightousness (spelling?) and conviction.

Yes, but a narcissist doesnt have a post-it stuck on his forehead...the situation unfolds much like a one-night-stand...looks exciting to begin with, but you feel used the morning after...you need some caution and skill to recognise the warning signs...Caveat Emptor...scold

DEFINITION OF A NARCISIST - ends up with all the blanket in bed, drinks the last drop of orange juice...walks past a full rubbish bin on the way to the door, takes the early morning newspaper and leaves the adds and the stock market report ................. tongue roll eyes roll eyes dunno

Dear wise Lagoona,

I tend to agree with the former and disagree with the later. I think it only takes a few weeks, 4 dates and a chance encounter of this topic in CS forum to know one and run a thousand miles from it. It is so true tho, it looks exciting to begin with ... but the excitement doesnt last long.

peace
