....ancient philosophy (eastern, european, etc) still has things to teach us who live in a modern world? I mean as the years and civilization progresses, new problems arise. So do you think that studying ancient philosophy can help us make our lives better?

yep, i think we can always learn stuff from history and ancient philosophy even! psychology is based on philosophy, its the philosophy of the information age.

it all depends on how you apply it to modern situations though.

i've studied a little bit of philosophy (psychology student here!) but i can't really remember much right now!

Yes, of course ancient philosophy still has things to teach us. Its true that new problems will arise, but we can always be learning and growing from our findings. We always need to be finding new ways to better our way of thinking and our way of life.

Yes and no. Modern technology has given us great advances in science and medicine.....but it has also made us dependant upon such technology. Back-stepping would prove beneficial.....had we not burned the bridges we crossed. Sadly, it seems, the modern world has become too egotystical to accept teachings from the past......It is a "know it all" world now.....the few of us who believe we have lost our way as humans, are too few in number to ever make a difference.

Yes, I believe there is alot to learn from ancient philosophy. The ancient peoples were humans too and some things are just human nature and will always be.

Situations change but the nature of people does not whether it be good or bad.

I do believe human nature does change according to the times. Look at how society is now compared to how it was say 50 years ago. There are a wide variety of examples....such as parenting, education, family structure, humanity, etc...the list goes on and on. Human nature changes as humans become less involved with the world around them and concentrate more on their individual needs.

Yes, we can still learn from the ancient philosophers.

Whether or not it will improve our lives depends on the individual. One needs to apply these things before they have any effect and it can take time to see a change.

An analogy: read a book about exercise and dieting day after day. You will neither lose weight nor gain muscle. Put the principles outlined into practise for one day...no visible change.

Commit to applying the principles over the long term...you can remake your body.

It is exactly the same with the philosophies that could help us to interact more lovingly and effectively and work together to ameliorate conditions in society. We would need to be applying them over the long term to see any results.

I study Christian (grew up Christian), Taoist (my Dad's interest), Wiccan and Native American philosophy.
I think the basic idea is 'respect life, respect yourself and be honorable with everyone.
Imagine what the world would be like if we ACTUALLY acted that way.

studying philosophy has little to do with improving the world,

Its putting it into action that show results. Many use the knowledge of the anceint ways to manipulate and control others.

I may be only a paperback book reader, but studying and applying the philosophy are different.

my 2 centsconversing
