I don't much care for CA wines and wines from Virginia are poor. I like wines from France and Hungary.

Good call. Eastern European wines are generally of an excellent quality. I found a sensational Pinot Noir a few years ago...divine it was.

Red in Winter ,White in Summer (all 4 days of it).Also depends what I'm eating. Reds,some of the Spanish ones,Shiraz from Oz and getting into Argentinian Malbec. Whites:NZ Sauv Blanc, Loire whites in general, Riesling (OZ or German )and starting to like viognier.

The best wines are produced from the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties, high quality, rich, and Bordeaux-like. Local grapes include:
- Gamza -the most widespread sort produces earthy, light bodied red wine good for simple fare.
- Mavrud- is a full bodied, spicy red that can age to more than 8 years
- Melnik- grown in the southernmost part of the country makes hefty red wines that age very well
- Pamid - rustic and hardly unforgettable but still good enough "commercial" for weekly drinking.
As still unpopular as it is, Bulgaria is the second largest exporter of bottled wine in the world, second only to France and it has four times the area, planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, of California. It appears to be the fastest growing new-comer on the market. The annual average production of wine in Bulgaria ranges between 200-220 million litres depending on the crop. In the Bulgarian wine industry, traditional classic technologies are applied, as well as refined, and modern ones borrowed from the leading wine producing countries like France.

i have tried bulgarian wines in the past and found them a little immature to the pallet compared to French or even SA and Oz wines!

My last batch of wine was made from a blend of Merlot and Tenet grapes which is excellent. People who have tried my wine wont even share it with family members. Thats how good it is.
Before that I made a batch when we had a drought (dry weather means the grapes have a higher sugar content) using Sangeovese grapes from the tuscany regeon of Italy. That batch was superb!
