If you have a child with someone with a different native language than your own , would you raise them to be bilingual?

Yes, as it would make sense.

After all, being fluid in more than one language is an advantage, communication wise.

absolutely! My mother is German, I was first generation born in the US and she refused to speak German once she moved to the states, after my Oma died, I lost it, there was no one to speak to in German, and its frustrating because I know that being bilingual can open many oppurtunities.

Shame things never worked out really!

Yes I would.

It's important to retain a native language or a dialect.

Gosh, in the old world of politics and I mean like eighteenth century, the diplomtic language was French.

I can speak a little French, Spanich, and Italian. I can understand the simple comversations with free on line audio lessons.
I don't have a whole lot of trouble reading the stuff either.

They are romance languages and a lot of the words have Latin roots.
My first langage is English.
My second language is Latin.

All three of my kids are bilingual... with my first husband I had trouble trying to convey to him the importance of our first daughter to be able to speak my native language which is Spanish; insecure @$$ he is he thought that we would gang up against him and speak Spanish among ourselves, to plot against him...

My second husband was no better... he didn't want me speaking English to the children, as we lived within a Spanish speaking community... I wouldn't budge... and now all three speak, write and read both English and Spanish, Spanish being the at-home language...

Being bilingual has afforded me many rewards... and I am capable of doing my job in any environment... culturally speaking... I also have translator's and official interpreter's license, which rounds up the slary nicely at the end of the month... dancing

I would hope so, then they could communicate with their grandparents from both cultures and would give them one hell of a boost in life.
