I wish you would have been here about a year ago when we were discussing time travel, it started out serious, but then turned humerious, it was really enjoyable...
Quantum mechanics is a fundamental branch of physics with wide applications in both experimental and theoretical physics. The effects of quantum mechanics are typically not observable on macroscopic scales, but become evident at the atomic and subatomic level. Quantum theory generalizes all classical theories, including mechanics and electromagnetism, except general relativity, and provides accurate descriptions for many previously unexplained phenomena such as black body radiation and stable electron orbits.
I have taken quantum physics calculus based and I loved it thou it was difficult...but I need it to be an engineer.
If yours is like my classes youll be learning about mechanics of Solids and Fluids, Electricity and Magnetism, Heat, and light. You probably dont have to learn all that
Quantum physics is both experimental and theoretical physics. Not typically observable or macroscopic scales but more into atomic and subatomic levels
wait until you get into relativity...that subject sucks
good luck if you need help I have been through the torture too of learning it willing to land a hand and a smile and a pillow if you feel like hitting something when it gets hard
<Is it only a theory, a figment of someone's imagination?>
in science, "theory" is a pretty robust concept. I think the term you mean to say is "hypothesis" which is basically an educated hunch in need of data to support it. With enough data and statistical analysis a hypothesis can become a theory, which basically means it is a concept that is probably true and is therefore a pretty strong statement about reality.
Quantum physics on CS! There's hope for us all yet! It's absolutely a viable science. Read up on string theory. It will revolutionize computing and our lives.
Also I find the theory of alternative universes fascinating. Every time you make a decision you fork (any Unix Man(2) API people here?) and in an alternate universe you make the decision that you didn't in this one.
The string theroy means that we have alternate worlds vibrating just out of phase with one another. Which in theroy there are duplicate people there of all of us..
An amazing transformation happens beyond the atom--everything solid disappears. Atoms are composed of vibrating energy packets that have no solidity at all, no mass or size, nothing for the senses to see or touch. The Latin word for a packet or package is quantum, the word chosen to describe one unit of energy inside the atom, and, as it turned out, a new level of reality.
At the quantum level nothing of the material world is left intact. It is strange enough to hold up your hand and realize that it is actually, at a deeper level, invisible vibrations taking place in a void.

Is this a ligitimate, viable science?
