I'm thinking about removing the carpet in my condo and replacing it with berber carpeting in the bedrooms and some type of wood product or other alternative in the livingroom. I'm not so sure about laminate as it seems to be very slippery to walk on and with having my grandchild going to be tearing my place in a few short months .... does anyone have any suggestions?
I'll need something stain resistant as well as I have a dog and cat as well.
Gee I gather we have no handymen or women on this site! I thought to get some input before I headed down to Home Depot because I wanted to know if anyone was happy with their own flooring choice.
I'm not a fan of laminate flooring. It's like cheap wall paper for your floors. There are other alternatives like cork or real hardwood. I'm putting real hardwood in my own house. It's not that expensive when you look at the price of higher quality laminate. You can get it prefinished and install it yourself. I don't know if Home Despot is the place I'd buy from. Here we have Windsor Plywood and they're an excellent choice for things of this nature. It's more of a finishing store than a general hardware. I'm not familiar with the Langley area but there is likely something in the phone book. I also like cork and might use that in my kitchen. It's fairly resiliant and not too slippery even when it's wet. Warmer than tile and moisture resistant. A bit pricey but if it's not a large area then that doesn't make a big difference in overall cost anyway. Wander around in a few of the carpet and flooring places in your area and get to know what products are available and what you like and can afford.
Thanks for the input ..... we also have Windsor Plywood in my area as well as many other flooring stores besides Home Depot but I'm not so sure of their reputation.
What I was looking for was feedback on the various types of flooring and people's personal observations from having it in their own homes. ie. does it resist scratches, doesn't get nicked, not slippery to walk on and most important how well does it resist spills.
As for doing it myself? lol ..... not too likely as I haven't had any experience in this at all.
Stay away from cheap laminate flooring. It's horrible for nicks, scratches, and its a pain to replace a single piece if something(WILL) does happen. I still like real wood and tile. Cork is another product that I'm interested in, although it is a bit more pricey. In the end you'll have to look at what's out there and decide for yourself. There are some good laminates available and they are expensive. Real wood isn't a bad choice overall. It's warm, easily repaired, stainable, natural and not out of this world for cost.
I've often wondered what the next craze will be in flooring and wall coverings. Maybe I've spent to much time alone.
Berber is the toughest choice in Carpet. As far as hard floors go. The best "New" flooring would be the laminates. Wood looking floors, either made of formica, or some are plastic, more rubber like. Better traction then then standard hard wood flooring.
Thanks guys for the information .... I appreciate it. At least it gives me a start and confirms my thoughts about laminate (but of course the budget will also play a major part in my decision).
Laminate tends to be slippery for awhile. After it's been walked on for a couple of months it's not. And with a grandchild around your place it's easier to clean than carpet, believe me
Wall-to-wall carpet can be a inexpensive choice, especially if you have children around who spill. When the kids grow up, you can tear it out and do wood in the living room.
I have beat up, wide board wood floors in my "new" old house. They will be sanded, varnished and I'll use area rugs. It's more restoration than renovation here
