BEING A SOUTHERN GENTLEMAN AND TEACHING MY SON THE SAME MANNERS THAT I GREW UP WITH I SOMETIMES GET MIXED FEELINGS FROM SOME PEOPLE WHEN FOR EX...... HOLDING A DOOR OPEN FOR A LADY SOMETIMES THE RESPONSE IS "I COULD HAVE DONE IT MYSELF " AND OTHERS YOU LOOK LIKE AN ALIEN FOR DOING THAT SORT OF STUFF.
SO THE QUESTION IS LADIES HOW DO YOU FEEL WHEN A TOTAL STRANGER HOLDS A DOOR OPEN FOR YOU????????

I find manners are a dying quality...but it is a shame because manners are very important and I find it very, very attractive in a man.

I say thank you because it was polite of them to do that. I truly don't understand why someone would be "offended" by simple kindness and consideration.

I REALLY ENJOY THE LOOKS THAT MY 12 YEAR OLD GETS WHEN HE RACES TO A DOOR TO OPEN IT FOR A LADY OR ELDERLY PERSON. THEY LOOK AT HIM LIKE HE IS SOMETHING FROM A MOVIE, AND I TAKE GREAT PRIDE IN THAT.

isn't English an awesome language, huh? grin

That's wonderful you teach your son a Laws of being courteous. In my opinion it has to be taught at schools ...not only to boy but (especially) to girls as well

Good luck and be proud wine conversing

I just went through this dating thing with a lady and it was a little nutty. Things, I knew, were just not workin out. I couldn't believe how rude the experience was, but ( sigh ) such is life. No one ever claimed life to be always fair. It bothered me a little bit, but I did what I could to remedy the ordeal and not hurt her feelings permanently.

So today, I was at the grocery store and this elderly woman wheeled up in an electronic buggy behind me. She was explaning that she needed a cart instead of the electronic buggy she was a drivin in the store. Apparently, the battery was low. So I noticed her mention and said "Hey I will go get you a cart." Her response was "You don't even work here????" So I said, "That don't matter."

I went and got a shopping cart for the elderly woman. She was appreciative and said "You are a nice gentleman..." Even the guy attending the check-out line thought it was pretty darn cool!

Honestly, it felt pretty good cause I darn well know that manners these days are important even in the toughest of situations that could arrise or the moods a person could be dealing with. Even with strangers it does matter.

Seems to me if you exercise all this independence stuff all the time, perhaps the point is lost?

I run into women often that get weirded out when a guy is cool like that, but ya know what is the big deal? It is just someone trying to be nice to you.

I know that woman at the grocery store could have said "Oh, don't do that for me I can take care of myself!" But, she didn't cause she just needed a considerate person to step forward. And instead she showed appreciative manners back to me too. grin

Manners are truly becoming a lost art these days. Here in Texas where I live we are taught manners from the moment of birth (or so it seems!). We say "Ma'am" and "Sir" all of the time.

A good example of this was shown to me recently as I went to the doctor. A young boy of about the age of 3-4 was struggling to hold open the door for his mother. After she passed through he looked up and saw me coming and held it open for me as well. I bent down and said, "Why thank you, young man!". He beamed up a radiant smile at me that sure could melt any heart of stone had it been present in the nearby vicinity. His mother said, "Thank you so much! I've been trying to teach him manners for the last few weeks!" I told her that she was doing an excellent job and should be proud of her adorable little son. grin

I'm honored and pleased when a man holds the door open for me and exhibits good manners. It shows that he was taught well and is respectful. thumbs up
