i think they are misleading, but don't they sometimes influence your thinking and behaviour e.g.: blonds are dumb; all russains drink vodka; men are physically stronger than women, etc.
stereotyping is as old as we humans have been around...
but as humans we should be able to overcome it
do stereotypes dictate how you feel about someone/thing???
They certainly can influence the way you think about someone or something. The hardest part is setting them asid long enough to find out if an individual is like or different from the stereotype. It's not wrong to have stereotypes stuck in your head or to have prejudices it's what you do with them.
Not to disagree but on average men are stronger physically than women.. men have 40% more muscle mass, but that is not to say that some women aren't...
I would lke to say no it doesn't but when I truly think about it there are times it probably does come into play w/o my intending it to. i.e....I do not want an insensitive man but then I also do not want a man who is too timid or too "weepy" and when u think about it is that not because we are taught very early on that men r to be the "strong" ones? I try not to judge based on stereotypes but I think no matter how hard we try not to every once in awhile we fail....after all like you said we r all just human
Mental strength CAN translate into physical strength. I lost an arm wrestling contest to a woman once. She blew me a kiss and then blew me away before I knew what was happening. But I AM strong and that only happened once. Come to think of it, that was cheating! I feel better already.
i would like to say i take ppl at face value ....... but i do admit to letting stereotypes getting in the way sometimes..
for instance just the other day i was walking down the street, it was dark, and 4 boys all in hoodies were walking towards me ......... first thing i did was hold onto my bag tight and tuck it into my jacket .......
they passed on their way without incident, just a happy bunch of teens
but i did put them into the "this looks like trouble" catagory
That is different. That is merely being aware. The last thing you want to do is leave yourself vulnerable to crime just so you can say you don't stereotype!
