How do we arrive at our beliefs and faiths? Howmuch choice do you think most people really experience when it comes to the fundamental guidelines they follow?

Mostly, it seems that, no matter where people are born, they stick with the belief structure dominant in their geographical area. What accounts for such lack of diversity?

most beliefs are instilled by our parents or individuals we respect.
Diversity comes from our own innate human curiousity or the unsatisfying results of the childhood belief we had.
I once "took up" buddism just to be near a "skirt" it was a good expereince while it lasted, it ended when we ended.
then the reasons you already memtioned.
thru my years of exsistence I've come to believe the more "Structured"and "guideline a belief has the more skepitcal I am of it.

hmmm...

I won't debate religion. Gets nasty...
However, I was introduced to several beliefs...Mormon, Christian, Chatholic,...and some thins just didn't feel right.
I experienced way too many things to attribute a neat package to it all...
In any given society there are more of one than another...burning witches is an old process of what happens to those not conforming...
My view? we are. simple, and true.

I like to believe my beliefs are forever changing.

Forever questioning.

What accounts for lack of diversity? Unwilling to seek knowledge, mental comatose.

Lack of diversity is the first step in a society's destruction.
many people have become sheep, folowing blindly never questioning. never asking "Why"
the idea of being in a relationship and not having the ability to ask or question the others actions or comments simply scare me.. the idea of my partner not having opinions is unthinkable ..for me anyway

I think its business and economy friend. In the working

world; organizations(us and canada)still use british

values. did a report on that too...diversity in the

workplace. A leading expert in asian culture said that

asians believe humbleness and quietness to be valued and

efficient, whereas in the workforce here its looked upon

as week and not confident. Spanish and latin cultures are

very family home oriented, and an many interviews reveal

that confidence was confused with aggresion in the black

minority. Mu sumarization of my report was that these

companies are losing out because diversity has so much to

offer it opens up the international trades. yes there are

workshops implimented but it doesnt seem to be enough.

(none of this information is from one viewpoint or
perspective but was found through tedious research, statistics canada and journals)

If your talking about pure morals and religious beliefs

well...from being raised catholic if you even thought of

looking or reading about other religions its a sin blah

blah blah. over the years I have stepped out of conformity

and try and inform myself of other cultures beliefs and so

on. but the actual system of harm no one, contribute to

less unfortunate, work for your way of life, has been

implanted in my brain through the way canada and america

has run and the values I learned growing up. Other

countries however see killing people everyday as the norm.

Yes some of this ignorance is geographic and religouse but

its also domination,brainwashing and death that shaped

some other countries beliefs and it has been passed down

so long that it became normal in there country.

Good inputs.

Not looking for a religious fight. I've just found it fascinating that there are so many but they stay where they are. If one 'worked', you'd think it would be obvious. But the main idea was to explore why people don't explore.

fear of being wrong, judged, condemd? didnt mean to include relion either but it tends to arise when speaking diversity and morals.

why people don't explore

good question

this vaguely applies
my sister is here now , last night she wanted to watch the local news ....this is funny yet it shows how people people have become un knowingly trained .

she 4 feet from Television but she had to watch the news and it was on a differnt channel.. the remote was not in sight...(slide between the cushions ) but she spent 10 minutes trying to locate this remote. when she only had to go to TV and touch one button. then she complains about missing ten minutes of news.....trained to do things only one way...not to explore other possibliites to problem solving or resolving...

"What accounts for such lack of diversity?"

Dbert, you ask such deep questions.

There are so many possible answers. Fear, guilt, lack of creativity, peer pressure, brainwashing, the list is endless I'm sure.

It is the purpose of dogmatic religions to tie the dogma to the god. Reject the dogma, you reject the god. This keeps people from rejecting the dogma. They begin to view the dogma as the word of god and therefore they connect it to god (Or I should say the connect their god to the dogma)

Fortunately, I had the presence of mind very early in my life to see the distinction between the dogmatic teachings of a religion and my connection with spirituality (or god)

I was freed from the dogma without having to feel like I was rejecting god, or that god was rejecting me. Now I see churches and organized religions as nothing more than traps that mankind has laid for himself to blind himself from his connection with the spiritual world. Religions are the greatest irony of the human condition.

I wish everyone could be free of them.

And now, let us raise our heads and worship the universe with John Lennon:

~~~
Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace
You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world
You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
I agree, at least for myself. Exploration is essential. It just seems unusual for the majority and I don't understand. Societies as a whole seem afraid of the challenge of really debating what their basic, elementary principles are. We are not educated to be the maximum a human can be, just to fill a slot in the social fabric; boys for soldiers and girls to make more boys.
So true!
How can non-religion be taught without becoming a religion itself?
This is why each individual must find spirituality on their own.
The rejection of dogma can only be suggested.
If it's formally taught then it becomes a dogma itself.
The irony of it all.
thought they had a name of those that had no religous belief?
I think being spiritual is so beyond those dogma's of religion. I guess I consider beng spiritual as a free form of belief.
I believe there is a hereafter. just what it is or where it is and the way to get there are not yet understood. So I do no harm to others with intent. and hold thisd belief for every action there is a reaction..yu choose to do any type action to me, from me you will recieve....
I "BELIEVE" that I am of the wood element, to bend with what comes.
To diversify for me means to explore, outwardly and inwardly.
Although I haven't been out of my geographical boundaries in a bit, I continue to strive to learn of my surroundings and self....
Have a deliciously diverse day everyone.
I'm back (how's that for stating the obvious?).
One point I'd like to see discussed is whether people in general have the realization that, no matter how much they believe in an authority, it is their choice to obey. Many times, when asked, folks say, "I was raised that way", or "you have to accept this", showing very little recognition of choice.
