Depends how you meet them really and if they know anyone that you know. Usually people meet through association. This is where internet dating has its dangers because nobody knows anyone else or has physically set eyes on them. It is a place where weirdos have anonymity and is a stalkers playground.
So be careful who you meet and if you do decide to meet someone from a website take pepper spray and a hunting knife - preferably a doubled edged one!

What a complete turn around that would be!
Before the Internet the vast majority of people met locally. It was quit common to date people who lived close by, easily within 50 miles or much closer.
To now only date people who live far away would really be a major chance in social interaction. One "problem" with the Internet is that it does tend to keep people from going out. How many people sit at home today at their computers typing into forums who would otherwise be out somewhere if it weren't for computers?

Probably a nice little safety zone for some. But for others it's a sad control issue.

Distance to me can make a bit of a difference. Time it takes to get there, having time to take that trip etc.
Its not a deciding factor on whether i would meet somebody but it does have influence. In driving distance I would say no problem depending on the drive time.
Something that requires flying would take more planning and time.
First and foremost have to be sure who you are meeting and be comfortable doing so. For the most part tho distance would have to be a factor for both parties before a decision to meet is made in my opinion.
